“Pete Schell and his partner Magali Gely operate what I think is the best new-wave of small-scale Barossa wine companies to emerge at the beginning of the 21st century… " Max Allen, The Future Makers
“In short, we rate them in the top few Australian producers… We think that they are a historically significant producer as they are one of the few producing artisanal quantities of full bodied red wines that manage to retain genuine complexity, savouriness and sense of place” Bibendum wine
New Zealand native Peter Schell and his French wife Magali Gely settled in the Barossa Valley almost 20 years ago and have quickly become one the regions leading vignerons. Their international influence and perspective is obvious in their wines, producing flavoursome drops that are inherently finessed, elegant, earth driven and poised... terms not often associated with the warm climate wines of the region.
Whilst doing things on an artisanal scale, Peter does not like to sit still, experimenting through different varieties and combinations, whilst exploring and sourcing from ancient (often 150 year old) vineyards from across the region. Peter's passion for Barossa old vine material is due to the concentration, complexity, spice and depth of layers that the low yielding fruit delivers. His skill and deft hand has been in naturally fermenting interesting plots of old vine red varieties, raising them in large format French oak vessels, and masterfully blending varieties and vineyards to achieve wines of effortless flow and balance.
Today we are offering three red wines from the Spinifex range, to give a deep insight to the work and skill of this artisan producer. All wines are different prices, so the option of selecting just one will be via email directly. We think they're all delicious, full bodied red wines with vitality, freshness and structure. Perfect for cold nights, long meals, slow cooks and hard cheeses. Always decant for at least 30 minutes and have knowledge that they will reward 5+ years of cellaring for the patient ones.
Spinifix Syrah 2020
Pete has coined this one Syrah, tipping the hat to the Rhone in France, with a higher toned, red fruited, spice laden Shiraz. These are from the higher and slightly cooler sites heading toward the Eden. Vine age is 20 to 60 years (averaging 40), whole cluster ferments boost the perfume, with 30% included. Flavours of red and black fruits, violets, white pepper and curry spice.
Spinifex Esprit 2019
The Esprit is the quintessential Southern Rhone blend, minus the Shiraz, with Grenache, Mourvedre and Cinsault leading the charge. The wine is crimson in the glass, appealing for the warm Barossa climate, and leads with a riot of dry herb, red fruit, licorice and spice aromas. Various sites from Ebenezer, Moppa and Eden, vine age 60 years to 150 years. 92 points from Wine Front, the lightest and most lifted of the trio.
Spinifex Bete Noir 2019
All serious old vine material, two thirds Barossa and one third Eden, up to 120 years. This is a trip to flavour town, with concentration of dark fruits, black chocolate, tobacco and pipe smoke. Whilst it is all power, it keeps a silk like texture and a refreshing, clean finish. Will cellar 10+ years.
We hope you enjoy this set. A window in to all that is good with modern Barossa Valley wines.
