“Foradori - immediately striking, gracefully elegant, discerningly tasteful, soberly serious while at the same time wry and playful, and above all always generous and sincere. Wait, is that Elisabetta or her wines? In fact, it could easily be used to describe one or the other."
Where to begin when talking about the wines of Elisabetta Foradori… there is so much to unpack. Her approach to farming and winemaking touches on everything we value at Press, and her Foradori wines are sublime. The vineyards sit in valleys amongst sheer the cliffs of the Dolomites in the Trentino region in Italy’s north east. The striking landscape must be seen to be believed.
Elisabetta was thrust into her winemaking and farming journey in 1984, when at the young age of 20, her father suddenly passed away and the responsibility of the family vineyard and winery was left to her. What she has achieved in the past 35 years has compelled international wine enthusiasts, with her soulful wines that breath a life of their own. She is now joined by her three children, Emilio, Theo and Myrta in managing the vineyard and cellar.
Foradori vineyards cover 28 hectares that are farmed organically and are certified biodynamic. Most of the vineyard is planted to the local red variety, Toreldego. These are stunning, dense, fresh, complex wines that we can source for you in small amounts. Though, it is the skin contact white (pushing orange) wines that drew our attention to Foradori many years ago, are the wines we buy every year on release, and is the wine we offer you today.
This wine is from the variety Manzoni Bianco, a local hybrid variety that is a crossing of Riesling and Pinot Blanc. Elisabetta hand picks her fruit then ferments the white grapes on skins in concrete for 7 days, before pressing off to acacia oak casks, concrete vats and clay vessels for 8 months ageing. The wine takes on a golden colour from the skin contact, but is bone dry, aromatic, rich, fresh, textured, grippy and delicious.
Aromas are crushed rock, white flowers, lime skin, orange oil and brine. The palate is medium bodied, richly textured, citrus and juicy green apple flavours with a clean, fresh herbal kick. It has a drying mouthfeel that lends structure and length. It is an exciting, alluring and very tasty drink. Scores are 93 Parker and 92 Vinous. We have 30 bottles available.
Elisabetta thinks the wine shows its best after three years from vintage, so hold on to it until the end of 2022 and drink over the following 6 years. This is a white for red drinkers, but also for Chardonnay, Riesling or Orange wine lovers. We think you will fall in love with the wines of Foradori, they are singular in style and thought provoking to drink. Almost as impressive as the place they are grown and the people that make them.
Here is a recent article that is worth a read for those picking up the wines.
