Alkina is the newest and perhaps most exciting winery in the Barossa Valley.

Tucked away on a 60-hectare property (43 of which are planted to vines) in the north west corner of the region in the town of Greenock, they are neighbours with another Press Wines favourite, Kalleske. Like Kalleske, Alkina’s commitment lies in the vineyard, with a staunch biodynamic farming program paired with a study and knowledge of their soils that is unrivalled. We think these first releases from Alkina will be marked in history as the small estate in introduced to the global market.

The brains behind the project include Chilean soil guru Pedro Parra whose work in profiling and subdividing the property has provided the framework and styles of these wines. They are atypical for Barossa Valley, absolutely unique, and harness a structure, freshness and purity that you rarely see in the region. Parra is complemented with the winemaking nous of Italian master winemaker Alberto Antonini. One important approach Antonini utilises is to limit the use of oak in the winery, preferring concrete vessels for ferments and ageing, which allows the fruit and vineyard to better express itself in the wine. His view is that oak is like a barbecue sauce and masks or drowns the flavour of the grapes. This is an opinion and approach we hear more frequently with the next generation of young Australian winemakers, and is refreshing to see employed in a traditional region like Barossa.

We have a trio of Alkina's first release wines on offer as a set at $219. As always, there is flexibility and if you would like only the Rose’s we will sell to you at $195 for a six pack. Likewise, if you would like just the Grenache. If you want a combination of only the reds, it will be $240. Please just email us directly for adjustments.

Finally, before we explain each of the wines, we recommend booking a visit to Alkina if you are visiting the Barossa Valley. Their accomodation and cellar door experience is next level. You will be on the biodynamic property and introduced to the commitment is involved in farming this way to  produce the wines you enjoy. Please reach out if you are heading to the region and we will introduce you to the team.

‘Kin by Alina’ Rose by Alkina 2020

One of the better Australian rose wines we have tasted for some time. Brilliant pale colour, wild red fruit and delicate floral aromas. Palate is bone dry, tart but with nice density, volume and texture through the palate. Delicious, tart and long. A very light, textured and dry Mediterranean style. Serve with cold meats and olives.

‘Kin by Alkina’ Field Blend 2018

This is a grenache predominant GSM blend. The most powerful, full and classic of the wines, but with an appealing, fresh and wild aroma. Richly fruited with spiced plums and raspberry on palate and a cranberry, chocolate feel. Some fragrance and woody spice (this one has a small amount of oak). It screams for Christmas, with generous dark fruit flavours but a freshness and structure that will suit the dinner table… and some medium hard cheeses. Impressive. Put in a decanter for at least an hour.

‘Kin by Alkina’ Grenache 2020

100% Grenache in the more modern and fresher style, grown on some of the rockier sites at Alkina. This is vivid red in the glass and very bright on the nose. Raspberry, red florals, some light candy aromas, aniseed and liquorice with some musk. The palate is intense in its medium bodied style, red fruits driving the wine and powerful tannins that are drying but ripe and delicious. It calls for grilled meats, sausages or some simple pastas.
